Support Men’s Health This Movember

Ever wonder why everywhere you go this month you see men with some of the most bizarre mustaches? These men are known as Mo Bros who grow out their stache this month of November in an effort to raise money for prostate cancer and testicular cancer. They sacrifice their self-image this month to increase awareness and raise funds for men’s health, which tends to be a neglected subject.

Prostate Cancer typically develops from the gland cells known as adenocarcinoma. It can grow fast but most often grows quite slowly. In fact, many men don’t even notice they have it throughout their lives. The risk for prostate cancer usually increases after males reach age 50. Risk also increases with family history and having relatives with prostate cancer so it is important to see a doctor if you are at risk for the disease. About 241,740 new cases of prostate cancer will be diagnosed and 1 in 6 men will be diagnosed curing his lifetime.

Thus, the goal of Movember is to increase awareness and education about the disease with their tagline changing the face of men’s health by creating an understanding and better attitude towards men’s health. The Mo is their ribbon for this month presented on the face of men everywhere. According to research conducted from the Movember foundation, during the month of Movember 43% more people became aware and educated about the health risks they face, 67% of people were recommended to see a doctor, 69% of people actually had a general check up with their doctor, 70 % of people started talking about men’s health issues, and 79% of people actually discussed men’s health with their own family, friends, and coworkers. The mustache in 2011 sparked 2,413 conversations just about men’s health! In addition they raised $126.3 million USD in 2011 and hope to increase their funds this Movember.
